Diva Dawn Upshaw – Biography. Upshaw was born in 1960 in Nashville, Tennessee. Today Upshaw is a cancer survivor. And in joyous celebration of that fact, on June 4 (a week before the formal opening of the Ojai Music Festival to which Upshaw is music director) the renowned soprano will reprise that performance of Ayre to commemorate the opening of the newly transformed Libbey Bowl. The last time Dawn Upshaw appeared at the Ojai Music Festival was in June of 2006. Five years later, and now a cancer survivor, the renowned soprano will reprise her performance there. Here, she talks with SFCV about what makes the Festival unique, teaching at Bard college, and an exciting new collaboration with Peter Sellars.
